A Guide to Crisis Support, Safety and Justice in Difficult Times
When life takes an unexpected turn — whether through personal crisis, threats to your safety, or becoming a victim of crime and seeking justice — knowing where to find help is vital. This page brings together trusted resources, practical guidance, and local and national support to help you, your loved ones, and your community stay safe and supported.
Personal Crisis Support
A personal crisis can take many forms—mental health struggles, overwhelming stress, or difficult life events. You are not alone, and help is available:
- Mental Health Crisis: If you feel at breaking point, reach out to services like the Samaritans, SANE, CALM, or NHS mental health support. They offer confidential advice and a listening ear, day or night.
- Emotional Support: Whether you’re experiencing distress, despair, or suicidal thoughts, helplines provide a safe space to talk things through and find your next steps.
Staying Safe: Personal and Community Guidance
Your safety matters. Whether at home, out and about, or online, these practical tips can help you stay safe:
- Stay alert and act confidently in public spaces.
- Keep valuables out of sight and your bag close to your body.
- Plan your route in advance and stick to well-lit, busy areas, especially after dark.
- Carry a personal alarm if you feel it would help.
- If you feel threatened or think you’re being followed, seek out busy places or knock on a door for help, then contact the police2.
Community Safety Partnerships bring together local police, councils, health services and others to address crime, antisocial behaviour and promote safer neighbourhoods. Working together is key to building a safer community for everyone3.
Domestic Abuse: Recognising and Seeking Help
Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of gender or background. If you’re frightened of, or controlled by, a partner, ex-partner or family member, support is available:
- Refuge’s National Domestic Abuse Helpline (England): 0808 2000 247
- Men’s Advice Line: 0808 801 0327
- Live Fear Free (Wales): 0808 80 10 100
- Specialist support is available 24/7, free and confidential, for victims and those concerned about someone else4.
Remember, abuse is never your fault, and you do not have to face it alone. You can also seek protection through the courts and access advice on your rights.
Justice: Support for Victims of Crime
If you’ve been affected by crime, you have rights and support available under the Victims’ Code:
- Victim Support Services: Access emotional support, practical advice, and help navigating the justice system.
- Counselling and Therapy: The NHS and other organisations offer therapy and counselling for victims of crime. There is no need to delay seeking help. Find out more about NHS mental health services.
- Witness Support: The Witness Service can guide you through the court process and offer support before and during trial.
- Compensation: You may be eligible for compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme if you’ve suffered injury or loss as a result of crime.
